South Lancs Travel to withdrawn 581 service Bolton - Leigh

South Lancs Travel have confirmed that they are to withdrawn their 581 service that runs from Leigh to Bolton via tyldesley and Atherton. the reason given is low passenger numbers between Atherton and Bolton, i decided i would set out and take a look for myself and my findings only confirmed what South Lancs Travel have said, below are passenger numbers that support South Lancs Travels decision to withdraw the service.

1:35pm from Leigh to Bolton
Leigh 11
Tyldesley 7
Atherton 2
Bolton 3

4:15pm from Leigh to Bolton
Leigh 7
Tyldesley 7
Atherton 1
Bolton 2

5:55 from Bolton to Atherton
Bolton 2
Atherton 2

Sadly as you can see the numbers are far to low to continue the service however the service will be partly replaced with services

South Lancs Travel services 683 and 693 will operate clockwise from Leigh via Atherton, Shakerley, Tyldesley and Astley whereas service 684 and 694 will operate anticlockwise, services 683 and 684 will also serve New Hall Farm and services 693 and 694 will serve Holden Road and Higher Green, all of these services will be departing from stand K from Leigh Bus Station.

There will be no direct link between Tyldesley and Bolton but as you can see from my results hardly anyone went from Tyldesley to Bolton, if you did want to make this trip you should use SLT service 685 to Farnworth bus station then get a 8 or 501 to Bolton Bus Station.

  1. I know it's 13 years late but I think the problem with the 581 was that after Atherton Train Station it was just the 582. If it had gone down Hulton Lane instead of St Helens Road and then followed the route of the 540 (along with potentially serving Hag Fold again) then it could have lasted longer at the very least
